In the preparation of the libretto of the future performances he used the chapters of the novel of Cervantes, which was dedicated to the wedding of Quitéria and Camacho (in the ballet they got the names of Kitri and Basilio). The main characters of the novel - don Quixote and Sancho Panza in the ballet the story become the characters of the second plan. Professional expert on the specifics of the ballet requirements ballet music, Ludwig Minkus at the order of Marius Petipa has created a vivid musical score. Premiere of "don Quixote" was held on 14 December 1869 at the Bolshoi theatre of Moscow. Orchestra conducted by the composer himself. The play was a great success and was soon transferred to St. Petersburg. For the new production of Petipa thoroughly reworked the script. Now the same dancer performed the role of Kitri and Dulcinea - ladylove of don Quixote and the brilliant classic PA except for the dream sequence appeared in the final picture at the ball. In the choreographic version by Marius Petipa drew the attention of many choreographers, but most successful believe the statement of the outstanding Russian choreographer Alexander Gorsky. All subsequent plays were conducted largely on the basis of their editions. Odessa first saw the ballet "don Quixote" in February 1933, the year directed by Pavel Virsky and Mykola Bolotov. In 1936 Mikhail Moiseyev offered his version of the ballet, which had a long stage life. 16 years later, in 1952, Vakhtang Vronsky resumed play, based on the best samples of the classical tradition of Petipa and Gorsky. Subsequently in productions of "don Quixote" in front of the Odessa audience stood all the variety of styles and choreographic tools choreographers Nikolay Tregubov (1966), Igor Chernyshev (1970), Victor Smirnov-Golovanov and Natalia Ryzhenko (1979).
