The plot is based on the play by Carlo Gozzi, who wrote his "tale for the theatre" in 1761 based on the novel by Azerbaijani writer of the XII century Nizami. To work on "Turandot" by Puccini began in the summer of 1920. The work continued up to the time of Puccini's death from cancer in 1924 Puccini did not have time to finish the final duet of Turandot and Calaf. The final duet and finale written by Franco Alfano based on the drafts of the author. This option critics acknowledge inexpressive, and because their version was proposed by the composers Luciano Berio (premiere in 2002) and Hao Wei (premiere in 2007).
