Staircase and Eternity              In world art, the image of the staircase has a long history, the origins of which are in the mythology of ancient peoples and in the Bible. The dictionary of characters interprets the ladder as follows:       “It means a transition from one plan of being to another, a breakthrough to another ontological level, communication of the Earth with Heaven in both directions: the ascent of man and the descent of a deity. Accordingly, the staircase has the meaning of the world axis, which, in turn, connects it with the Cosmic Tree and the pillar.       In addition, the ladder represents access to reality, the absolute, to the transcendental, the transition from the unreal to the real, from darkness to light, from death to immortality. This transition is also the path to another world through death. A staircase makes Heaven accessible, but it can also be removed.       Initially, the staircase existed in paradise, and there was a continuous connection between God and man, but it was lost with the fall ... For the Jews, the staircase is a means of communication between the Lord and man through angels. In Christianity, the staircase is a symbol of the sufferings of Christ, as well as James and St. Benedict. The Japanese have a ladder - an attribute of the god of a thunderstorm, personifying a means of communication between Heaven and Earth ... "Photographer Sergey Gevelyuk does not turn to philosophical symbols. His task, at first glance, is much more modest. He seeks to draw the attention of spectators to the magnificence of stairs as the most important components of the architectural masterpieces of Odessa architects to the exquisite beauty of individual flights of stairs and flights of stairs in buildings that are monuments of architecture and urban planning. In these works, on the one hand, admiration for the masters of the past, on the other, anxiety for the fate of their creations. Anxiety is due to the fact that due to a negligent, soulless attitude to this wealth, the monuments may collapse and disappear forever, and also - they can be disfigured to please the nouveau riche. This is the high civil pathos of the work of Heveluk.       Steps - the path to ascent and descent down. Ascent is the law of life that defines the meaning of being. Rising above, we gain a wider view, a more visible idea of ​​our past, present and future. The deeper we think, the more obvious the connection between different times becomes, breaking which is criminal. The beauty created yesterday belongs to tomorrow. How to save it today is a task that our generation will have to solve. And this must be done not formally, but with the soul, with the realization of our responsibility to our children and grandchildren.
