LUCIEN DULFAN ▪ This is the wizard and magician ▪this In many collections and homes of Odessa contains paintings of Lucien Dulfan created in the 1960-80-ies, however, the Odessa spectator is not so often can see the works of the American period of the artist. Dulfan, immigrated to America in 1990 and settled in new York quite successfully continued his artistic practice. However, few of his works have crossed the ocean, and Lucien was taken out of context of Ukrainian contemporary art. The reasons for this neglect lie not so much in distance as in the situation of the city the last thirty years, when the name Lucien, the artist was pushed to the periphery of the Bohemian folklore. Latest Odessa exhibition was held in 1989 at the Museum of Western and Oriental art. Eyewitnesses remembered the event as scandalous, since the opening and ending comments of Museum visitors in the guestbook. The viewer is not always ready to encounter the pulsating vital images of the works of Lucian, his paintings often cause resentment. However, before leaving Lucien, Odessa art Museum purchased two works by the artist, one of which – "Kiss of Judas", is the Central story in the art of Dulfan, developed by the artist since the 70-ies and, of course, inspired by the famous homonymous painting by Caravaggio from the collection of the Museum of Western and Oriental art. "Kiss of Judas" Lucien filled with generic images that are devoid of individual features, the characters represented are equal. Everyone can be a Messiah and everyone can be a traitor, every medal has two sides – that is the reflection of the artist about human nature. Over time, the plot of "Kiss of Judas" transformirovalsya a series of "Kiss", several papers from which are presented in the current exhibition at the Museum of Western and Oriental art. Dulfan owns a special painting technique, which is characterized by texture, layering, pasty, but the paint layer from this excess material becomes excessive and deaf. The master resists technology, his painting takes on a "glow" from the inside, the paint of the elusive flickers like a glare of light on the water surface. Attention to the relationship of the shades of white in the color scheme says about the application of picturesque principles teacher Lucien Dulfan at the Odessa art school – Dina Fruminous. Graduates of the workshop Fruminous share a special mastery of the white color that has become a recognizable feature in the art of Odessa nonconformists. The artist in teaching practice was a mediator between the teachers of Odessa modernists of the first third of the 20th century, Theophil Fraerman, Moses Musulmaninom and his students – artists of the generation of the 60s. Beauty, aesthetics, harmony in the works of Lucian, the magic of color relationships, create a special metaphysical space of his paintings. The mythological themes and the depth of the images creates a phantasmagoria. A special place in his art is the theme of the city, which appears the element is able to receive and to expel from your body of the artist, the city, which required obedience. The symbol of this city becomes the image of the monument to the founder of Odessa Duke de Richelieu on Primorsky Boulevard. In numerous urban series figure of the Duke is portrayed from the back and it looks like he turned away from the viewer. Dulfan intentionally uses this point of view, because it opens the perspective to see the vast light-air space, which combines sea and sky. This space appears as an allegory of freedom, to be in his field-so to get out of freedom city. The dulfan is possible to achieve the expansion of space not only through the image space. The device characteristic of Theophilus Fraerman in still lifes and "interiors", close and Lucien is an image of "picture in picture", "picture in picture". Dulfan has successfully applied this technique in a multi-year series of "Window" which is represented in the current exhibition at the Museum of Western and Oriental art. Its characteristic feature is a synthesis of landscape and still life, where the landscape is the light and airy environment with the inclusion of objects that represent the plane of the window. Still life is represented by the ratio of the items on the windowsill, which is the same as the space outside the window, form your space. Exhibition "Lucien" aims to expand the artistic field of Odessa, to return the name of a classic in the history of Ukrainian art and to present to the audience samples of scenic and aesthetic research.
