Plastic: from idea to disaster

21 August 2019, 19:00
category: lecture
100 UAH
place: Co-working center "Impact Hub Odessa" (1A Grecheskaya street)

Plastics and plastics are special artificial materials created by idealist chemists to save elephants from extermination (due to ivory) and solve the problem of property inequality. Unfortunately, these materials over the century of use have become the cause of environmental disaster and one of the factors that threatens the destruction of a significant part of the biosphere (including humanity). What types of plastic are there? When and how did they appear? What threatens us with their use? What to do with produced and used plastic?              At a lecture, we will talk about plastic as a product of oil refining, as well as plastic as a source of “new oil”, about whether living organisms are able to absorb plastic, and also how much plastic is in our body and on our planet right now. We will get acquainted with Japanese bacteria and Ukrainian beetles that all of humanity are looking at with hope, learn how lactobacilli help create biodegradable materials, and also think about whether plastics technology can help to improve the environment. The history of plastic, its present and future will be revealed to us from an unexpected angle. Come and talk about the important.              The lecture is delivered by Vladimir Nemertsalov (Volodymyr Nemertsalov), associate professor of the Department of Botany, ONU named after Mechnikova, assistant professor of medical chemistry, ONMU.              Entrance: 100 UAH       If you register, we will definitely save a place for you: https://forms.gle/q72xkvSqVM1texSS8By the way, in order not to miss the events of the Living Room, we recommend subscribing to our telegram channel: https://t.me/HubLivingroom
