“New forms are needed, and if they don’t exist, then nothing better is needed,” - this is how the character of Chekhov’s play “The Seagull” expresses his attitude to the modern theater.              Did Chekhov try to express his opinion with Treplev’s opinion regarding the theater of that time, or did he ironic over his desire to search for something new instead of searching for the eternal? It is difficult to answer this question, because Chekhov was particularly mysterious and at the same time an unusual sense of humor (as you know, "The Seagull" was genreously defined as a comedy).              It is also difficult to say how much what is happening with modern theater today will affect the history of the theater as a whole.
