Olga Korolkova / Utopia / Anti-utopia in world literature

05 December 2019, 19:00
category: lecture
100 UAH
place: Co-working center "Impact Hub Odessa" (1A Grecheskaya street)

Five hundred years ago, Thomas More described the wonderful, in his opinion, world of the island of Utopia and thereby gave the name to the genre, which is based on the idea and narration of the ideal structure of the human community. Tommaso Campanella, Cyrano de Bergerac and many others will continue the history of the genre. But by the beginning of the twentieth century, utopia began to rapidly turn into dystopia - a genre built on the same methods, but which changed the pros and cons in assessing the prospects for the development of mankind. We suggest talking about why this happened, about how dystopia developed from George Orwell's classic novels 1984 and 451 Fahrenheit by Ray Bradbury to The Hunger Games by Susan Collins, Russian dystopia by Vladimir Sorokin and Ukrainian Yuri Scherbak. What does modernity want to understand about itself, looking into the future?              We invite you to the next lecture from a series of conversations about literature with an assistant professor of the Department of Cultural Studies, Art History and Philosophy of Culture ONPU Olga Korolkova.              Entrance: 100 UAH       If you register, we will definitely save a place for you: https://forms.gle/qEWJPA7vUSqTACNq5              By the way, in order not to miss the events of the Living Room, we recommend subscribing to our telegram channel: https://t.me/HubLivingroom
