The Kaparot ceremony is performed on the eve of Yom Kippur, at dawn, when, according to Kabbalah and the Talmud, the mercy of the Almighty is revealed to a special extent. But you can do it earlier, in the days preceding Yom Kippur. The idea of ​​this ceremony presupposes the comprehension of the fact that for our sins we could, God forbid, comprehend the fate of the slaughtered bird. For kaparot, it is customary to take a rooster for a man and a chicken for a woman (for a pregnant woman, it is customary to take three birds - two chickens and one rooster). If it is not possible to purchase a bird for every person, you can rely on the opinion of those teachers of the law who believe that with the same chicken it is possible to perform a kaparot for many women and with the same rooster for many men. If circumstances do not allow the purchase of chickens and roosters for kaparot, it is also allowed to use fish or money (which are then given to the tzedakah).
