The first major races of cruising yachts in the USSR took place in Leningrad, this is the "Baltic Sea Cup", which began its history in 1969. The idea of ​​holding the Black Sea Cup belongs to Pavel Vasilyevich Dosich, the former chairman of the Vodnik DSO and who later became the director of the Black Sea Yacht Club. The Cup was first held in 1973. In those days Pavel Vasilyevich, the godfather of the football team "Chornomorets", was a man of great sporting deeds. Therefore, he conceived the regatta as a grandiose event. The stages of the regatta, which became the largest on the Black Sea and united almost all the cities of the basin, were: Odessa, Evpatoria, Sevastopol, Novorossiysk, Tuapse, Sochi, Poti.Of course, the executors of such a grandiose idea as the Black Sea Cup were the Odessa Sailing Federation and the Black Sea Yacht Club. Much credit for the direct organization of the regattas belongs to the vice-president of the Federation, Konstantin Mikhailovich Prokhorovich. Konstantin Mikhailovich was the head of the Department of Physical Education of the Odessa Institute of Water Transport Engineers, and it was not for nothing that this educational institution had the largest yacht fleet in Odessa (13 yachts). Konstantin Mikhailovich himself was the captain of the yacht "Sadko" and until the last years of his life participated in regattas and contributed to the development of sailing. A great contribution to the development of sailing in Odessa was also made by the President of the Federation, the former rector of the Water Institute, academician Yuri Leonidovich Vorobyov, now he is not among the yachtsmen either. And of course, the participants in those first events themselves became yachtsmen from many and not even the Black Sea cities of the Soviet Union. In the USSR, the two largest competitions among cruising yachts became the "Baltic Cup", which always started in Leningrad and the "Black Sea Cup", which started almost always in Odessa. Unfortunately, due to objective reasons, the Black Sea Cup regatta at the end of the last century went into oblivion.The regatta was revived in 2008 by Nikolay Andreyevich Tindyuk, who was elected president of the Odessa Regional Sailing Federation. During the cadence of Nikolai Andreevich, all-Ukrainian regattas were held dedicated to the Day of the Fleet of Ukraine, the Day of Independence of Ukraine, Cups of the port of Ilyichevsk, Yuzhny, the Championship of Ukraine, a regional children's sailing school was created, the pupils of which under the leadership of Sergei Chervyakov, Vyacheslav and Alexander Smetanka, Alexander Gudyms showed excellent sports results. Taking into account the will of the Ukrainian people and their eternal desire for independence, confirming the historical significance of the adoption of the Act of Declaration of Independence of Ukraine, on August 24, 1991, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine decided: Consider 24 August as the Day of Independence of Ukraine and annually celebrate it as a state national holiday of Ukraine. Since 2008, the Odessa Regional Sailing Federation celebrates the Independence Day of Ukraine with an open regatta of cruising and racing yachts “Cup of the Black Sea. The regatta is held at a high professional level, implementing sports state programs and health programs for the population of the Odessa region and Ukraine as a whole.
